This book offers a welcome fresh look at the relationship between economic development and community development, asking how the latter can be harnessed to tackle poverty and disadvantage. It critiques the standard approaches that provide top-down solutions focusing on either investment, technological change or the advancement of human capital. In their place, it offers a new paradigm based on emergent good development practice, to work from below to enable communities rather than imposing change from above, through what Robin Eversole calls ‘place based development’.
